This is the typical situation where faddishness is giving it more popularity than it actually earns. Berkeley is prone to this kind of problem, where popularity is more a question of Insta rankings than actual merit.
I stopped in twice in the past week. The first time, it was right after opening time and it was relatively empty. I was waited on by a person that later in the week I saw serving as a barista, she had an air of faint annoyance at having to actually interact and work with customers. On my second visit, today, she and her fellow barista were so engaged in their conversation for the entire 15 minutes that I was in the shop due to the long lines, that they were producing drinks at about half the speed that was possible.
The line stretched from the counter to the door, and based on my former experience in a similar job, it would have been half this length if the people making the drinks put customers ahead of socializing with each other and looking cool. They almost never made eye contact with a customer the entire time I was there unless someone asked a question when picking up the drink, and often that person had to repeat the question in order to get their attention. This is completely unacceptable when you’re paying 10 bucks for a coffee and a treat.
On the other hand, the young, slightly heavyset guy of color who waited on me at the register by the muffins was clearly committed to doing his job well. He tried to keep the line moving and his efforts to keep the service level high, was being thwarted by the chatty pair making the drinks, who ignored most of his questions the first time he asked them.
Food and drink were 4 out of 5: the classic mochi muffin precisely as advertised, crunchy outside and mochi within. Slightly
overbaked this time compared to my first visit. Iced coffee latte was excellent coffee but over sweet.
Overall, the treats are unnecessarily too caloric, evidenced also by the clientele who range above the norm. The Asian food this place keeps trumpeting as its inspiration is much healthier than this extravaganza of sugar and high glycemic carbs in the mochi flour.
Making a habit of this place would definitely be detrimental to your health. If they want to garner a higher rating, they need to coach the self-impressed barista staff on putting the customers first, and they need to add more options that showcase the delicacy, subtlety, and elegance of Asian cuisine instead of taking American sugar cravings and overeating, and combining them with some Asian flavors.
Not recommended. In Berkeley, you have superior options for gluten-free, baked goods, and coffee.
This is strange, but I feel compelled to warn anyone who will get sick from wheat and gluten. I had eaten at this restaurant with the understanding that it was “dedicated gluten-free”, an exceptionally high standard for food safety for celiacs and others who are very sensitive to wheat. The food tasted great! Unfortunately, this is not longer safe, no longer “dedicated gluten-free”, as in, the kitchen prepares wheat ingredients now after having previously kept them out of the kitchen. The weirdness is that there’s no communication about this on the menu or in person. I got the info from a gluten-free guide. When I’ve been to Los Cilantros, I’ve talked about it with the staff: “So glad this place is gluten-free and safe for me!” I guess they don’t understand that somebody could be seriously ill for a few weeks from this surprise.
Suggestion: add a poster advising “not a gluten-free kitchen”.
reliably delicious, healthy food! they have gluten free and vegan options, and even though I am neither, I happily order those items. Always clean and friendly staff! with a lot of different options for whatever flavors you're in the mood for.
We came to try their gluten-free pancakes and waffles. The corn flour waffles were a bit too grainy and tough. The rice four pancakes were good, but not the best I've had. I was glad they also offered gluten-free toast. However, the menu has toast served with potatoes, which is too much starch for one meal. The place was tiny and cute and service was good. Overall nice atmosphere with mediocre breakfast.
So delicious! The gluten free options were particularly tasty. We really like the falafel sandwich and the salads. Nice staff and welcome environment. Perfect for brunch or easy lunch. Not far from The museums too!
I've been coming here for several years and I'm always satisfied. They offer gluten free bread and other gluten free options. The staff is very attentive and food is delivered quickly.
Salvadoran cuisine is almost everything gluten free. Pupusas are the famous dishes and are corn based. Staff is very knowledgeable and have a different gluten free menu.
Attempting to eat mostly vegan I made an effort to stop by and got a gluten free BLT for ~$11.50. It had excellent taste and the vegan bacon was very satisfying as well.
The take-home Caesar salad and vegan cheddar cheese was also delicious and could be an easy substitute for anyone attempting to go more plant-based. 👍🏼
A favorite for over 30 years. They recently catered a family event with vegans, vegetarians, Celiacs, a peacetarian, and omnivores. Everyone was delighted and satisfied. Le Med makes it all so easy and delicious.
Really nice people and delicious food. The coffee comes in a cute large mug. They were able to make the California Benedict for me without diary or gluten. Not so great area of town, but very comfortable inside
Hello, I recently ordered your dough and I’m just so thankful you are in the Bay Area! I first heard of PASSIONE PIZZA dough from my boyfriend who goes to Whole Foods often and we both tried it! I was able to order the dough online as I’m hours away from Berkeley. I personally have not been to the restaurant but I can only IMAGINE how delicious it is! I love the dough please don’t ever stop making and selling! We appreciate gluten free healthy options with no toxic ingredients oils etc! Thank you thank you thank you! 🤤
Tiny takeout spot with cute and biodegrade food boxes, also has outdoor seating. The food is always extremely delicious!! They have healthy soup and salad options, if you are gluten free like me and can’t do a gourmet fried chicken sandwich mmmmmm
Love this place after a hike. The menu is varied to accommodate many dietary needs including gluten free buns. The food is delicious and the beverage menu ample.
The service is friendly but a bit slow.
Mely made my birthday experience FUN! She is very outgoing, friendly and even assisted my friend with a gluten allergy. The chef happened to pop out and to let Mely know the " green curry mussels were 86'ed" as in sold out LOL. He was very kind and he even assisted with being super accommodating to my friends Gluten diet.
We stayed till close and they let us do pur thing...the food was amazing & drinks we're even better..
Thank you Mely!!!
Cozy outdoor seating under heaters nice. Gluten-free pizza crust could use a little adjustment. The flavors were amazing! But the bake was a bit stodgy.
Amazing food and teas/beverages with plenty of pescatarian, vegetarian, gluten free options as well. Really gorgeous and huge backyard garden space to dine outdoors.
Important news flash: they do BRUNCH in addition to incredible dinners. I could write a whole post on how amazing and lovely this is as a date spot for dinner and how much I freaking love their salads and gluten free pizzas (possibly my favorite one in the bay), but this is about brunch.
We had no idea they did brunch and when we looked at the menu for it online, it didn’t list any mains. But we went anyway and were blown away. I’m adding a pic of the actual brunch menu so you can see the real selection offered.
Y’all, they have a BREAKFAST PIZZA and I promise it’s even better than you would imagine. Do you like breakfast? Do you like pizza? This is a heavenly chimera of two of life’s greatest joys.
👑🔥 Don’t sleep on the brunch! But also the perfect date spot. Get yourself a restaurant that can do both, and support local.
The owner was there during our visit and went out of his way to create an excellent experience. Also, the patio is very dog friendly 🐶
