Capturing emotion in your portrait photography

Instructor Message

“It is one thing to photograph people. It is another to make others care about them by revealing the core of their humanness.”  - PAUL STRAND

If I had the choice between visiting the Eiffel Tower in Paris or the one in Vegas, I'd choose the one in Paris. Because I like things that are authentic. And the same goes for the kinds of photographs that I respond too. I don't care so much for pictures that seem fake or staged. I like photographs and portraits that show the subjects' true personality. If you do too, and want to know how to get that kind of life and soul in your images, then this class is for you.

While beginners are welcome to take this class, technical aspects of photography (how to use the camera, f-stops, shutter speeds) will not be discussed. It's assumed that the student taking this class will already be familiar with the process of taking a decent picture, and is now interested in learning how to make meaningful, compelling portraits.

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the basic elements of successful photographs
  • Learn to put subjects at ease for relaxed and natural portraits
  • Learn the secrets of authentic portraits
  • Learn to avoid common mistakes

Suggested Materials

This class will work best for students if they are working with a 35mm camera (either film or digital will do). The images you'll be asked to submit for critique (optional) should be new images that are made based on the assignments from this course.
