Melanie Burk

When I started my design company six years ago, I didn’t really know what I was doing. Although I had a degree in design and a minor in business–I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I didn’t know how to charge clients, how to work with them and present ideas, and how to even go about my work process. I didn’t know how to get clients to begin with! There were many mistakes along the way, but I never let them discourage me–I had to provide for my little family and I was determined to make it work, and I was determined to succeed.

Now after six years, I own several companies and I’ve been able to carve out a niche for myself in branding, websites, products, hand lettering and patterns. I have worked closely with many amazing and inspiring clients, and have been able to learn from them. I am a collector of happy–I believe that art should be meaningful and beautiful, and that it can impact others for good. I love working, I love learning, and I love sharing what I have learned–from my successes and failures–with my students.

It’s been more than three years since I started teaching, and in all my classes, you will find not only technical skills but tips–tips to make it faster, easier, and more practical in your daily use. Things that I wished someone had told me when I was starting and studying design. Tips on how to put yourself out there, how to work with clients, and how to be a creative in today’s market.

I believe that everyone can succeed as an artist-and that we can all be better creatives as we help each other.  There is nothing that I find more rewarding then seeing my students succeed– and I have been able to help and see many of my students work hard, and successfully start and run their own business. This is why I teach–because I believe we are all in it together.

My life isn’t all about design– I have a dreamboat husband who I love more than anything, and three little girls who are my everything, and who have taught me to find the beauty in a messy, joyful life. I love the outdoors, surfing, March Madness, photography, opera, paddle boarding, hiking, traveling, typography, foreign movies, alternative bands, and of course design (but not necessarily in this order).
