Incredible tradition fish and chips. Option for gluten free (in a separate fryer for a fair fee on any day of the week). So refreshing to have a local chippy who knows how to prepare it safely, but especially amazing to have it each day and being so delicious
Birthday celebration meal with 23 people. Arranged food order in advance. Meal served promptly and all food delicious. Everyone really enjoyed the meal. Staff very pleasant and efficient. 2 of the party gluten free and able to order from gluten free menu.
My wife is a Coeliac and must have a gluten free diet. If she eats gluten containing foods, she becomes very ill after about 2 hours. She went to Jeyes on Friday 16th May 2025 and asked for a gluten free scone. She was offered either fruit or cheese and chives. She asked the server to confirm that the cheese and chives scone was gluten free. This was confirmed. My wife thought that the scone tasted strange and eat only a small amount. 2 hours later she was violently sick and incapacitated. She had to call for help as she was looking after our granddaughters. She was unable to drive home and had to stay at our son’s home at Earls Barton overnight. We have since spoken to Jeyes management, but they deny any fault with their process for Gluten Free food and were dismissive of our complaint. However my wife had only eaten that scone and it must have contained gluten. I would advise any Coeliacs to not use Jeyes as they cannot be trusted to order and handle Gluten Free food. We certainly will never use them again.
This visit was a birthday gift and it exceeded all expectations (So thank you Aunty) the dinning room is decorated beautifully and in keeping with house next door (78 Derngate) for those that do not know this dinning room is attached to Charles Rennie Mackintosh house which is also well worth a visit.
So to the afternoon tea. Sandwiches & pastries came on a 2 tier cake plate. Presentation could not be faulted and knowing that we eat with our eyes, this was sumptuous. Word of warning unless you have a hearty appetite, be careful here or you'll never make it to the cakes! Yes the cakes also came on a 2 tier stand, overflowing with an incredible selection. Again Presentation took 'awesome' to a whole new level. As an extra we had prosecco and it was a very generous glass topped with a raspberry. All presented on beautiful vintage crockery. They have obviously put a lifetimes worth of thought into this venture and it shows. The staff (owners) are very friendly and ensured we have a lovely time and we definitely did. And they also cater for vegetarian, vegan & gluten free so long as they know in advance.
Now the dinning room is on the ground floor but it is well worth noting that this is a very old listed building and the toilet facilities are downstairs which are narrow and a little steep so bear that in mind if you plan to visit. There may well be a more accessible toilet, it might be worth checking!
We were both well impressed with our tea even though we had to take quite a lot of it home with us (oh dear, how sad!) So would we say it was value for money, absolutely. Would we go again, yes. Can't wait to get home, check my calendar and see when we can book up again. But don't take my word for it, try it for yourself, you won't be disappointed.
Food was as you would expect from a family style restaurant. The ribs were cooked to perfection and fell cleanly off the bone. The salad bar was fresh and regularly restocked. Service was good. One of the better harvester restaurants. Unfortunately head office have changed the app for allergies lumping all items together eg tomato soup contains gluten - it doesn't but the bread roll it comes with does. Staff were very helpful and checked ingredients for me. Disabled toilet by bar - radar and key behind bar. Good access just remember to put car registration in tablet by entrance for free parking
Lovely breakfast with my family here today, food was of really high quality and they catered for me being Gluten Free no problem! Even the lovely cake selection had Gluten Free options which I normally can’t join in with when eating out with the family, so it was definitely refreshing and appreciated! Everything was really tasty! Super clean and friendly what more can you ask for, thank you :)
