As a vegetarian visiting St. John's I was bit concerned about food selections for myself but Nook and Cannery was such a delight. The vibes were immaculate and the food was incredible. They offer many ways to adjust meals to suit vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free folks. My favourite meal during my trip!
The staff was extremely friendly and provided consistent care. The food was wonderful, and they have Gluten Free/Celiac options. They are are able to sub alternatives if needed.
Would definitely go back
Everything is perfect there ! As I have no home, finding a place that feels welcoming and where I can use a good wifi is precious and I felt good working all day there, for few days actually. People that work there are awesome, pretty good coffee/chai latte/caramel macchiato and they also had gluten-free option (only the bread for sandwiches but they have plenty of choice and the one I had was delicious). I recommend 100%
Got some takeout, and staff were so helpful with helping to choose celiac-friendly options! Not only was the food great, but pricing was very reasonable. Would 100% eat there again.
I have celiac disease and asked about gluten free options on the menu. I was told I could have a gluten-free bun with my burger. I asked if the soup of the day was gluten-free, the wait staff went to check and told me that it was. I ordered the soup and a gluten-free burger.
When the food arrived, there was a bun alongside my soup. I asked if the bun was gluten-free. The waiter went to the kitchen to check and came back and told me it was not. They took the bun away. I was not offered a gluten-free bun.
A few minutes later, I was several bites into my burger when the waiter returned to tell me there had been a mistake, and the burger bun was not gluten-free. They took the burger away. I was not offered a replacement burger.
The manager came to our table to apologize for the error. I explained that this would make me very ill, within about an hour. A few moments later she returned with the chef, who also apologized. They told me took my information and told me they would go over what happened with their staff to make sure it didn’t happen again. They took my phone number and said they would call me to check on me the following day, and the day after that. They never called.
This is serious. Eating gluten not only makes people with celiac disease very sick, it also causes permanent intestinal damage.
I had a great gluten free sandwich here! The gf bread is made off-site and they have a separate toaster and mayo for the sandwiches. Obviously they bake regular bread here so the risk for a Celiac isn’t zero but I enjoyed my sandwich very much and the man at the counter was so helpful and patient with my questions!
Had breakfast here twice during our week in St. John's, and it was worth it! So many options, and the fact that they can serve most options gluten-free (i.e. on a gluten-free bagel) was great. Unfortunately, they do not have a dedicated deep-fryer, so I wasn't able to get any of the unhealthy stuff that everyone else had, but that's okay...I appreciated the fruit substitution for the hash browns!
My partner and I ate here once during our stay. I am celiac and need gluten free options which they had on the menu!!! Great experience and so lucky to find GF options even in a small town. We will be back!
I go here everytime I'm in town, which is a couple times a month for work, and I've never had a bad drink here. There's a huge variety of drinks hot and cold and they always have interesting seasonal drinks as well. I always get a sandwich with a gluten free bun when I'm here, my favourites are the pesto chicken and the cran-apple chicken sandwiches, the gluten free bun is very good, and doesn't fall apart like other gf breads tend to.
The Irish Loop Coffee House has a surprisingly large food menu with reasonably priced and tasty items. We went there for coffee and tea, but I also had an order of home fries. The fries were really great!
There are options for those who are gluten free and vegetarian. I didn't see any vegan only dishes, but I think they'd be able to accommodate people looking for a plant-based dish.
The service was quick and friendly, which is always appreciated. The atmosphere and decor is retro diner themed, which was a cool surprise.
I definitely recommend The Irish Loop Coffee House when driving route 10 through the area.
Absolutely fantastic cafe. Gorgeous espresso beverages with alternative milks available. Gluten free friendly options available for all of the sandwiches and other options. Creative choices and interesting flavours.
They were chock full of customers when we arrived at 1:15 PM yet still found what might have been the last table available for us. I would suggest they might have been a bit understaffed for the lunch rush, but were definitely trying very hard to keep up. I hope management sees this review. Your waitstaff needed more help today, but they did fantastic under the circumstances.
Desserts were beautiful. Would love to have had a gluten free cheesecake option. Enjoyed the GF peanut butter cup.
Highly recommend!!
Although not advertised, and probably tough to accomodate on a busier night, the staff worked with me to meet my dietary needs! I appreciate their hard work. If you are gluten free or have other food allergies, would recommend giving it a try. Pretty hipster for the locale, but typical new age brew pub feel.
I managed to get pan fried cod and it was fantastic!
If you have a gluten sensitivity, intolerance or allergy this is not a place to eat at. On Sept 27 2024 I went there with my sister for lunch. I advised the waitress Lori, that I have a gluten allergy. I ordered a gluten free Caesar salad and fries which were cooked in a dedicated fryer for just fry’s. When our order came out she brought the fries and advised the chef put croutons on the salad in error and is in the process of doing a new one. About five minutes later the salad came out. I was eating away at the salad and when I was about have way through I found 3 croutons. I thought I was going to get sick in my seat when I found them. I can’t believe the chef did not make a new salad he just tried to pick out the croutons and sent it out for me to eat knowing full well it would make me sick as a dog for days. Our waitress was shocked when we showed her the croutons on the plate with my salad. She had no idea the chef did that. If you have a gluten sensitivity/ allergy ect this is not a place you should ever eat at. Obviously the chef has no understanding of gluten and how it works on someone with a gluten allergy. I was so upset and sick for days….
My wife & I stayed in the area for a few days on our honeymoon & this was absolutely the highlight. Their gluten-free fish cakes were a highlight for me (best I ever had) & the toutons were my wife's.
Cheers to Dawn, Kim & Kim for making such a warm environment & having a great chat with us.
Went to this place on Saturday for some later eats. Extremely impressed with the entertainment, service, and food. I did not eat a lot, I do like that they have a lot of gluten free options. The atmosphere here is fun and inviting. Definitely recommend for late eats and entertainment.
There's a gluten free version of most everything on the menu. Penne as a gf pasta, all of their sauces are gf, and most of their toppings. It's very good to not feel limited for choices.
Sweet little cafe on a beautiful Oceanside drive. Lots of seating and an outdoor table option on a fine day. The menu has a good selection of appetizers, salads, burgers & wraps. The server said that a lot of the menu can be made gluten-free. We had the squid rings and they were some of the best I have tried around NL - the batter is light with a salty flavouring. The Spinach dip was meal size & the French fries delicious. The fried chicken had a different kind of coating, reminded me of shake and bake crumbs from years ago. Tasty just not a crunchy batter. Really good portion sizes. The bountiful cheesecake selection will bring me back in an instant. Oh, and don’t leave without a Homemade Flakey for later. A great spot that really is worth the drive.
My friend called and asked if they could accommodate dairy free along with the gluten free menu and they said they could- when we got there- they could not. Womp womp
The staff were friendly and helpful.....4 of us were gluten free and our waiter (of 16 years their) was great....he took super care we had gluten free delicious food!
We love going to Jack Astor's. There's something for everyone from our picky eater, to our vegetarian to our celiac. Candace is the best but I might be biased!
Always a wonderful place to eat and celebrate special occasions with family and friends. The food was delicious as always. The staff were exceptional! Being the mother of a child with a tree nut allergy it is scary going to some restaurants that either are unaware or nonchalant about allergies. The chef took time to speak to us about the various dishes and he checked on the waffle batter which is a mix that was not safe. Then dessert time another lovely lady took well care of my daughter with tree nut allergy and my aunt with Celiac- gluten allergy. They were very accommodating. Highly recommend and the new owner is sweet! It was also beautifully decorated for Christmas!
Lovely restaurant with a delicious gluten-free burger (the Amelia burger, with a GF bun) and the best bacon-wrapped scallops (also gluten free) I've ever had. The server (Kim) was very helpful and seemed knowledgeable about celiac and concerns about the potential risk of cross-contamination with wheat flour. Strongly recommended! 👍👍🍔 🤤

Cannot understand for the life of me how this restaurant only has an average 3.7 star rating. It’s top shelf. Do yourself a favour, ignore the poor reviews and try it. We had a party of 10 that showed up late on a Friday night without a reservation and yet had no issue getting seats and everything on the menu was available. Some comments from our group - best nachos ever eaten, fantastic french fries, great soup, awesome baked beans, etc. some really nice takes on Newfoundland food. Service was also excellent and prices were very reasonable - cheaper than the poor meal we had experienced at another highly rated local restaurant. Good celiac options as well.
Great to see such an excellent restaurant in Gander. Check out the international lounge exhibits and the movie theatre in the airport too. Makes for a really nice evening.
Wide selection of gluten free options and alternatives that can be offered; I believe only 3 or so menu items they said couldn't. Our server (Brianna?) Absolute gem and very cautious about making sure it was celiac friendly. Been 24 hours, no gluten reaction.
