We enjoyed the afternoon tea and atmosphere at Mad Hatters this afternoon. I required Gluten free, and I can say it was the tastiest I have ever eaten. The quiche was on a layer of ham instead of pastry was a masterpiece. I don't often have to take some home, but there was so much to eat at a very reasonable price. I would highly recommend going to this nice friendly restaurant.

Quite a small place but to be expected from a small cafe type establishment. All food is exclusively vegan with some gluten free options. Food was reasonable but but not the best

My daughter took me for Mother's Day. A lovely treat. The food was delicious and the staff are always so friendly and welcoming. Plus I really appreciate that they ensure my daughter has a wonderful meal despite being gluten and dairy free. The go above and beyond.

Lord knows if I could leave 0 stars I would. We rang this place to ask if they catered for people with celiac disease (gluten free) at 12:54pm they said yes we arrived at 13:01pm & ordered what we wanted which was 2 paninis (1 gluten free) & a cheese & ham toastie. We waited around 45 minutes if not longer to get the food no idea how it took so long but anyways it arrived to our table at 13:49. So a very long wait for a toastie & 2 paninis. When the waitress came to our table she told me “I’m not sure why they have done this but the crisps on your plate are not gluten free” so not only was it a long wait they have now put gluten food on my gluten free food !! 🤣so I asked her to take the crisps off which she did & the photo below is what I was left with!!! Absolutely shocking for £5.95 I also paid 80p for my coleslaw which they put on my partners gluten food instead of my gluten free plate 🤣🤣 our total should’ve been 23.80 but they charged us £27.60 ! will never ever ever go here again it’s so hard to find somewhere gluten free & good service etc clearly this is not the place 💀just going to add the staff we’re not approachable at all very moody didn’t want to resolve the issues we had & not one apology despite me stating I needed gluten free. Disgusting

First visit 23/7/24 7pm. Asked for gluten free fish and chips, young lad in glasses asked did I want them cooked in a separate pan and if so it would be 30 minutes because the pan wasn’t on. He looked shocked when I said yes I’d wait and said he could cook it in the shared pan. I’m confused why the takeaway offer gluten free option if it may then be contaminated from a shared pan. It’s not a dietary choice I choose. I have a serious allergy with awful symptoms. I waited for the gluten free pan and the food was lovely, decent batter, not greasy but sadly I’ve had a reaction and been really unwell most of the night. I won’t return.

I ordered a bacon sandwich. I was asked if I wanted butter or sauce and I declined as I'm lactose intolerant but nice of them to ask. Had a bottle of coke. Bacon sandwich was lovely perfectly cooked and no fat on which is a plus for me who likes the rind 😂😂. Had a lovely latte after and as I'm lactose intolerant they had other alternatives such as soya milk which I had this time. They are very polite staff here and it's nice they can go above and beyond to make your visit a good one. Nice presentation of food. Good communication. They take your food and drink to your table after ordering. Alternative food replacements as you can see on the menu that they want to accommodate your needs. Whether your lactose free or gluten free. They have you covered. Wait time was only few minutes for my sandwich which is expected as your food is cooked fresh and cooked to order and not holded in a container like Gregg's sitting in a container for 30 mins plus lol. Definitely returning. Atmosphere is great here nice quite chill music on. low and spacious. Clean tables and decor. Staff clear tables quickly and promptly but don't disturb you if your just chilling not asking if your done to move you out quick which is good chill zone for me. Tables and chairs are good and a chill sofa and a long sofa bar style seat Infront of window is comfortable as a alternative if you need a bigger seat instead of the usual table chairs seats. Thanks again for a lovely experience today 😁

I organised a surprise 70th birthday here and while the bar area itself was lovely (apart from a piece of wood that kept falling off the back one of the booths?) the overall experience on the day was very disappointing. Upon booking I was told there would be someone at the bar, serving guests so they could buy drinks as and when they pleased, which is exactly what I wanted. The staff were really helpful leading up to the event, they even took the cakes in on the morning and set them out on the table for me. However, on the day, I was met by a young girl who seemed slightly out of her depth. She was mostly alone and I felt quite sorry for her. She told me that there was no one to serve at the bar and it would be table service only and we would get a bill at the end. This wasn’t what I was told when I booked and really didn’t work for us as there was around 30 people and it meant we all had to sit at the end and split the bill and naturally, some people left earlier than others, before the bill came. When I suggested bringing the card machine to the table so guests could pay as their order was taken, she told me she did that at first but then she got wrong off her boss for it🤷🏻‍♀️ I asked if we could use the bar through the other room to go and be served and I was told no. I felt I’d been deceived when booking and had I known there would be no one at the bar, I would’ve gone elsewhere. The food was also very disappointing. There were no ham sandwiches (an absolute staple in my opinion) there was just cheese and onion, egg and tuna. The samosas and spring rolls were soggy, the quiche was dry, the ‘rolled ham and beef slices with a creamy coleslaw filling’ was missing the coleslaw, the crudité platter was dry and the ‘selection of crisps’ consisted of two trays of just some cheap form of Doritos. The gluten free sandwich I requested for a relative with celiac disease was literally just two slices of dry bread with a slice of ham slapped in the middle. I expected a lot better for the amount of money I paid. Overall, we didn’t let this spoil the experience as it was more about the people who were there, however, lots of guests made comments about the ridiculous bar tab and the service we experienced was very disappointing.

Delicious lite bite before the theatre Pitta bread pizza chicken , pepperoni , peppers & onions very tasty. Not a great amount gluten free but the service was great and the environment establishment 5* served hot and cold drinks. It's in one of the quiet streets not far from tsb Bank but near enough to winter gardens , Sunderland festival of light and mowbray park. Just got a picture of the food not the drink I had.

Authentic Vietnamese in Sunderland, wow! Great menu, very tasty, quick and friendly service. Catered for Gluten Free also. Very happy and will definitely return.
